About Nora’s English Institute

Nora’s English Institute was born from a passion for language and a desire to make a difference. After relocating to Germany in early 2020, Nora began working in marketing and soon discovered her love for teaching English through online tutoring. What started as a side gig in January 2021 quickly blossomed into a full-time career. Motivated by the joy of helping others improve their English, Nora earned her TEFL Level 5 Certification and expanded her teaching efforts.

By February 2023, Nora was fully dedicated to her passion, and since then, Nora’s English Institute has grown to include Nicole and Jonathan, who bring their unique expertise to the team. Together, we are committed to providing exceptional English education, personalized to meet the needs of each student.

At Nora’s English Institute, we believe that language connects us all. Our mission is to empower you with the skills and confidence to communicate effectively in English. We are here to guide you every step of the way, helping you to not only improve your language abilities but also to thrive in every conversation.

About Nora

American English Tutor

Founder and CEO

Growing up and studying in Texas, USA, I earned a bachelor’s degree in International Studies from Texas A&M University. I decided to move to Germany after graduating in 2020 and began the adventure of a lifetime. I started Nora’s English Institute as a way to share my love of the English language and American culture.

I am TEFL Level 5 certified and a member of the teaching staff at the German-American Center (DAZ) in Stuttgart, Germany. My passion for teaching stems from my personal experience with the challenges and rewards of learning a new language. My academic and personal background fuels my enthusiasm for learning about and engaging with people from diverse cultures.

I enjoy listening to music (especially country), discovering new travel destinations with my husband and playing with my two adorable guinea pigs, Maverick and Murphy.

How did you become fluent in this language? Does it relate to your background, or did a teacher once inspire a passion for it in you? I am a native English speaker from the USA. However, I only discovered my love for the English language when I began learning my second language (German). I find the building blocks of languages fascinating and believe that learning multiple languages opens up so many more opportunities in life.

Name a person, whether living, historical, or fictional, who best represents this culture for you. Since American culture is so diverse, it’s very difficult to choose just one person! However, I would personally mention F. Scott Fitzgerald. He was an American author who wrote at the beginning of the 20th century. His most famous work, The Great Gatsby, deals with the idea of the American Dream and the consequences of pursuing this ideal. Although he wrote the book in 1925, I find that the themes are still relevant today, as many Americans continue to question what the American Dream really means for them and their fellow citizens.

Is there a word, expression, tradition, or typical behavior in the language you teach that particularly impresses or amuses you? I find that English is a very polite language. Americans, Canadians, Australians, and Brits are known for their politeness and the importance of small talk. This politeness is also reflected in the language. Americans often say, “Thank you, I appreciate that!” when expressing gratitude, and I really like the use of the word “appreciation” in the language.

Why do you think it is so important to master this language? English is the global language today. Whether someone wants to travel, conduct business in another country, or reach a higher academic level, English is essential. Since so many people have had to take English lessons at some point, many have unpleasant memories of learning the language. My goal is to show not only how important English is but also how much fun it can be.

What makes learning this language particularly challenging, and why is it especially worthwhile? Compared to phonetic languages like German, English vocabulary can sometimes be quite difficult to pronounce and spell. I always try to find reading material based on my students’ interests to promote natural vocabulary acquisition and support the use of these new words through informal and enjoyable discussions afterward.

Do you have a memorable anecdote related to this language from your professional life or school days that you’d like to share? I’ve always enjoyed English, even as a child. I won the spelling bee at my school in the 5th grade, and in high school, I scored in the 98th percentile on a national standardized test for English reading and writing. I never expected to teach English as a profession, but I truly enjoy turning my “weakness” of not being a native German speaker into my greatest “strength” to help others achieve their English goals.

Help us get to know you a little better by telling us more about your travels and/or experiences abroad. I studied International Studies at Texas A&M University. As part of my degree, I participated in a year-long exchange program at the University of Tübingen. I had just turned 21, and it was one of the happiest times of my life. I learned so much about other cultures from the other exchange students from around the world. I had the opportunity to live with a German host family and learn more about German life. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I moved to Germany in January 2020 to start my career. Since then, I’ve had the chance to travel to Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Greece, the Czech Republic, France, Spain, and Ireland. I’ve also been to Mexico and the Caribbean, and I’d love to explore the Middle East as my next travel destination.

In a nutshell: What makes you a great tutor? I bring my American enthusiasm combined with German structure to help you achieve your language learning goals… and have fun while doing it!

How did you become fluent in this language? Does it relate to your background, or did a teacher
once inspire a passion for it in you? I grew up in sunny South Africa in the beautiful city of Cape Town where I attended the German school. We spoke English and German fluently, often blending the two languages to the horror of our teachers. My preference however, was always English, which led me to study English Literature and Film alongside my Business Science degree at university.

Name a person, whether living, historical, or fictional, who best represents this culture for you. Desmund Tutu, the late Anglican Archbishop of South Africa comes to mind. He was like human
sunshine. Despite so many socio-economic challenges facing the country he maintained a positive
outlook, showing love for every human being regardless of skin colour or background. He embodied
the African philosophy of “Ubuntu” – which means “I am because we are”. His life is an inspiring
reminder of the power of compassion and unity.

Is there a word, expression, tradition, or typical behavior in the language you teach that
particularly impresses or amuses you? In South Africa you might hear someone say, “Stop at the robot.” Now if you were hoping to bump into R2-D2, I must disappoint you. A traffic light is called a “robot” back home and it’s always fun to see the surprise on visitor’s faces when they hear it.

Why do you think it is so important to master this language? Language is the key to the human heart – to understanding one another. Communication remains essential in both business and personal interaction, even in our digital world. Learning a new language isn’t just about acquiring new vocabulary, it’s about accessing new cultures, perspectives, and literature. Essentially, it’s about gaining a deeper understanding of our beautiful, diverse world.

What makes learning this language particularly challenging, and why is it especially worthwhile? I have had the privilege to travel to nearly 60 countries in the world. Whenever I was not able to communicate in the native tongue I could continue using English. English remains as one of the most spoken languages worldwide, opening doors and paving the way for further interaction.

Do you have a memorable anecdote related to this language from your professional life or school days that you’d like to share? Back when I was a child we would often role play private investigator. Of course I drove a smart, white Mercedes cabriolet and the language of choice between us girls was always English. Way cooler, way more stylish, just all together better.

Help us get to know you a little better by telling us more about your travels and/or experiences
abroad. I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa and went to the German International School. My parents, both Swiss from Zurich, had remained in the most southern part of the continent on their honeymoon and hence my journey starts in the sun, speaking Swiss German, German and English.
After completing my Abitur I travelled the world as a Flight Attendant for Swissair before returning to
Cape Town in order to study Business Science. I completed my Masters degree in Marketing and
continued working at the university as a lecturer. Love finally brought me to Germany, where I worked in an online marketing agency for many years. Raising our three children fulfils me with a huge amount of joy and seeing them pick up more and more English language skills is very rewarding.

In a nutshell: What makes you a great tutor? I love people. And with that comes the joy of seeing individuals grow by learning and expanding their horizons. As a native speaker both in English and German, I am in a unique position to teach the language with the correct translation if needed. Moreover, I am sensitive to cultural differences and enjoy sharing my insights.
